About Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects 30,000 people in St. Joseph County.  According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps 10.9% of residents in Indiana have diabetes.  One in three do not know they have the disease.  While diabetes is a manageable disease, left untreated it can cause many complications even death.  It is the 5th leading cause of death in Indiana.  It is also the leading cause nationally for blindness, amputations and kidney disease.

Read the 2017 National Diabetics Statitics Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  It has statistics on diabetes and disease complications which highlight the need for diabetes control.  There is also information on the four types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, gestational and prediabetes.

The Indiana State Department of Health has also issued a 2014 Diabetes Report with statistics for the state.
